Wittenberg: Where the reformation began

Can you recall a moment when you felt like everything in your life had changed? A time when you realized that nothing would ever be the same again? Maybe it was your wedding day, or the day you became a mother or father, or the day your divorce was final or the day someone you loved died. Or maybe it was something you said, or a decision made in the heat of the moment, but in the end, something definitely changed and it wouldn't be the same again.

Today I had that thought as we eagerly gazed upon the Castle Church doors where Martin Luther pounded his 95 thesis, his questions for discussion for the University students. However, once they had been posted everything changed and it wouldn't be the same again. Thanks in a big way to the newly founded printing press, Luther's words set in motion a firestorm of responses. Obviously, many supportive and many not.

I wonder if Luther had any idea his frenzy of complaints against the Holy Roman Catholic Church would result in such a revolution of change. I'm pretty sure he was surprised at how his rant took on a whole life of it's own. Something definitely changed and it wouldn't be the same again. Like a pebble thrown into a pond and the ripples extend out, Luther's theses changed our world.

Luther best summed up the dramatic changes his words affected by saying, "But God's wisdom is greater than man's." Basically accepting God's sovereignty. In turn, Luther's response has given me hope. So when I'm faced with those times of great joy or great sorrow in my life, when I realize that life will never be the same, I have the assurance of God's humbling grace and I'm thankful for the blessings of His never ending love. Thanks Luther for your post and here's mine. Amen.
